Houghton Lake High School, due to the amazing work of our Peer/Link program, has earned status as a Unified Champion School (UCS). This Special Olympics subgroup is a movement that embraces inclusivity of students with disabilities through sport, inclusive youth leadership, and school-wide awareness.
To earn this status, HLHS had to meet 3 criteria:
1. Do a unified activity (sport, event, exercise) - Linkfest snow-tubing at Hanson Hills
2. Inclusive leadership - this is our Peer/Link Program
3. Whole school engagement - Peer/Link would attend an activity or event and promote UCS - this fall, Peer/Link will hand out free sunglasses and pom-poms that were purchased with the Unified Champion grant.
Being a welcoming school for all students continues to be our mission, and we could not be more proud of earning this status!!! A huge thanks to Amy Bontekoe and our Peer/Link leadership for spearheading this.
