Welcome to Houghton Lake High School! My name is Brent Cryderman and it is an honor to serve as the high school principal in Houghton Lake Community schools.
We are an 8-12 building that houses 540 students with forty professional staff. As a learning community we are striving to continuously improve our practices to positively impact student achievement and performance. Again this year we made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and our students exceeded the State average for percent proficient in Reading and Writing and our average ACT composite was slightly above the State average. We will continue to focus on making gains, especially in Mathematics and Social Studies.
Our academic programming is competitive with area schools offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English Language, Literature Government, and History and a wide range of dual enrollment opportunities with local colleges. We also hybrid courses in Microbiology/Genetics, Accounting, and Astronomy. Our motivated students have the opportunity to maximize their learning by taking courses through Michigan Virtual High School as an Independent Study. Students that have experienced academic struggles have the opportunity to regain credit through an online curriculum. Houghton Lake High School has been approved for a seat time waiver which allows students greater flexibility in personalizing their academic program through a combination of traditional and virtual courses.
We are proud to offer a strong program in the fine and performing arts. A point of pride for the Bobcats last year was having our Concert Band receive a Superior or First Division rating at MSBOA State Festival and we had artists recognized at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, among other competitions. We also have a growing Drama and Forensics program. Our visual artists had works recognized in the Jack Pine Conference Show in Clare this year. Our athletic program continues to improve with some key changes in coaching positions and strong student involvement in both boys and girls rosters.
